Deputy Manager, Innovation R&D Chemistry MCFR
TerraPower is seeking a MCFR Deputy Discipline Manager to support the Molten Chloride Fast Reactor (MCFR) program. This position reports to the Senior Manager of Innovation R&D Chemistry. The role centers on personnel and technical oversight supporting the development and execution of chemistry R&D Chemistry team activities critical to the MCFR program beginning with conceptual studies tests for new salt chemistries and thermochemical systems and evolving toward the integrated design, scale-up, and validation of salt chemistry systems supporting reactor demonstration and deployment. You'll collaborate with members of the R&D, design engineering, and quality groups in a high-performing, multi-disciplinary environment to enable design decisions. This role is hybrid with on-site four days per week. The ability to be physically present at our Everett, WA lab is a requirement.
This role provides technical and personnel leadership, ensuring that experimental work, laboratory operations, and process development align with TerraPower's safety, quality, and innovation goals and helps to advance a first-of-a-kind reactor toward commercial deployment.
Key Responsibilities:
•Serve as a primary point of contact for MCFR Innovation R&D Chemistry
•Inform the MCFR Innovation R&D Chemistry Manager of activities within Innovation R&D Chemistry discipline
•Approve technical documents when delegated by the MCFR Innovation R&D Chemistry Manager
•Provide oversight of technical tasks within discipline areas or responsibility
•Lead discipline group meetings when needed
•Assign tasks to individuals within MCFR Innovation R&D Chemistry to support project objectives
•Interface with project stakeholders to ensure tasks are prioritized appropriately and promote communication across the discipline
•Assist in the development, maintenance, and use of discipline guidelines (e.g., design criteria, design guides, desktop instructions, design notes).
•Assist with the engineering staffing plan, hiring process, and onboarding within the discipline
•Provide management guidance, mentorship, training, 1:1s and Company performance reviews for individuals within MCFR Innovation R&D Chemistry as required
•Coach less experienced engineers and dedicate time and efforts toward growing talents
•Ensure technical capabilities (training) and professional development of individuals within MCFR Innovation R&D Chemistry align with project needs as required
•Recognize the need and recommend obtaining external subject matter experts
•Approve weekly timecard submissions for individuals within MCFR Innovation R&D Chemistry as required
Key Qualifications and Skills:
•Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering and 8 years of relevant experience with 5+ years for experience in handling alpha emitters, and radiochemical and molten-salt systems in glove boxes, fume hoods, or radiochemical laboratories. Experience level may be partially substituted for advanced degree depending on position relevance
•At least 2 years of experience providing hands-on training, supervision, and mentoring of radiochemists and managing or supervising laboratory spaces or facilities in a radiochemical or high-hazard environment
•Strong working knowledge of NQA-1 and its application in R&D and experimental operations
•Demonstrated ability to structure and plan basic and applied research in radioanalytical chemistry and other areas relevant to molten salt systems
•Demonstrated experience in collaborations with industry, universities and/or national labs is a plus
•Strong organizational, communication, and technical writing skills including specifications for procurement, testing, and fabrication is required; proficiency with Atlassian Confluence, Jira, and other collaborative tools
•Must possess a broad understanding of the various science and engineering disciplines and how they interrelate in the design and testing of plant systems
•Experience demonstrating the highest standards with respect to safety and radiation protection in all work activities and familiarity with radiation protection and NRC standards, knowledge of DOE/NRC requirements, regulatory compliance, and test documentation practices
•Ability to understand requirements (regulations, codes and standards, etc.), incorporate them into TerraPower documents, and provide associated guidance to TerraPower personnel
