Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility.

Job Summary:
This position is for a Geotechnical Engineering Specialist who will perform geotechnical activities for the Poland AP1000 project, and originate/check analytical calculations and numerical modeling, specifications, and reports (including licensing documents). The successful candidate will report to the Geotechnical and Hydraulic Engineering Services Supervisor or their designee and is expected to be able to work independently. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities, a can-do attitude, and the desire to innovate designs. The selected candidate will be expected to travel to the job site in Poland and other Bechtel and client offices in the U.S. and overseas for periods of time ranging from a few days to several months. In addition, it will be required that the candidate have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and embrace Bechtel’s diversity, equity & inclusion, leadership, quality, and safety values. This will be a project assigned position based in Reston, VA.
Major Responsibilities:
This role will require site visits in Poland, review of site and subsurface geotechnical investigations data, originate/review geotechnical engineering designs and specifications, and originate/review geotechnical studies in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements. The work will require attending meetings and coordinating with other geotechnical engineers, other technical disciplines and/or client engineers in a team environment. Meetings could be held virtually, or in person in the U.S. and overseas. Responsibilities include the scope described below.
- Development of geotechnical design parameters for soil supported foundations
- Bearing capacity and settlement calculations
- Soil liquefaction assessments and mitigation
- Ground improvement design and installation
- Pile design and installation
- Foundation settlement analysis
- Soil slope stability analyses
- Soil excavation support calculations
- Engineering specifications including earthworks, piling, ground improvement, soil excavation support, etc.
- Technical memo, study, and report writing (including code required and licensing documents)
- Vendor submittal review and integration into the design solution
- Budget and schedule tracking and quality compliance
- Coordination with other technical disciplines in planning and executing work as an integrated team
- Technical support of more junior geotechnical engineers
Requirements
Education and Experience Requirements:
An M.S. degree in Geotechnical Engineering from an accredited university or college and minimum 8 years of progressive related experience; prefer Ph.D. degree in Geotechnical Engineering from an accredited university.
Previous demonstrable experience working with teams of geotechnical engineers (and/or engineering geologists)
Knowledge of industry codes and standards (Polish, European and international) related to geotechnical engineering
Experience with geotechnical software such as SLOPE/W, LIPLE, PLAXIS, etc.
Experience with Microsoft office programs, and other common computer programs
Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
Ability to utilize engineering and office automation tools effectively.
Ability to communicate in English.
Right to work in the United States without sponsorship
Required Knowledge and Skills:
Fluency in English
Knowledge of industry codes and standards (Polish, European and international) used in the nuclear industry
Demonstrable previous experience working on a large industrial EPC project
Knowledge of Polish geology, preferred knowledge of geology around Lubiatowo
Experience with licensing, design, and construction of commercial nuclear power plants
Experience with nuclear quality programs
Ph.D. degree in Geotechnical Engineering from an accredited university.
Experience working with procedures meeting nuclear quality assurance programs and occupational health and safety
