Pay Range
$36.50 - $47.28 Hourly for the 571.2 level
$43.78 - $56.70 Hourly for the 571.3 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a Health and Safety Technologist/Sr. Health and Safety Technologist in the ES&H Directorate to support one or more of the Integrated Safety Teams (IST). You will provide health and safety technical support to the Weapons and Complex Integration Directorate customers consistent with LLNL’s commitment to a safe and healthy work environment.
This position will be filled at eitherlevel based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this roleyou will
- Provide health and safety technical support to a wide variety of safety discipline (Health Physics, Industrial Hygiene, Industrial Safety and Explosives Safety) activities including workplace monitoring and surveillance operations, analyses of the work environment, assist in writing safety procedures and reports and provide technical safety guidance as well as participate in emergency response activities and abnormal events.
- Operate and maintain radiological and industrial hygiene detection instruments and sampling equipment.
- Observe and take measurements of and analyze basic data from radiological and industrial hygiene monitoring equipment, systems, or operations to determine safety compliance with an established design or a standard procedure. Initiate appropriate corrective action when needed to assure adherence to procedures and design criteria.
- Implement and maintain safety discipline programs known as Discipline Action Plans. These outline routine surveillances such as radiation/contamination surveys, inspections/tours, various Industrial Hygiene surveys such as ventilation, Beryllium, Noise, and Air Sampling.
- Obtain, prepare and assist with analyses of radiological and industrial hygiene samples.
- Perform tests and sample analysis associated with experimental operations.
- Monitor operations and provide safety guidance to assist workers in safe work practices. Will interact with co-workers, scientists, engineers and skilled technical personnel and keep team management informed of changes to operations/facilities through regular communication.
- Complete and maintain a vast amount of training including qualification as a DOE Radiological Control Technician (RCT) as well as requisite H&S Technician Training i.e. Industrial Hygiene, Industrial Safety, Emergency Response. Conduct field training and training evaluations in support of worker qualifications.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the 571.3level
- Provide advanced technical support and perform advanced radiological tests and sample analysis on experimental operations in a wide variety of multi-discipline activities. Write and prepare safety policies and procedures including safety controls. Operate, maintain, and calibrate sophisticated radiological and industrial hygiene detection instruments and sampling equipment.
- Perform advanced radiological and industrial hygiene surveys and measurements. Obtain, prepare and assist with moderately complex analyses of radiological samples. Observe, interpret and take measurements of, and analyze data from advanced radiological and industrial hygiene monitoring equipment, systems, or operations.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Associate degree in Occupational Safety or Radiation Protection or equivalent combination of education and related experience such as Naval Nuclear Power School, Radiological Control Technician (RCT), Industrial Hygiene Technician, Commercial Nuclear Power or DOE Sites.
- Intermediate technical knowledge and analytical, decision making and problem-solving skills to acquire and analyze basic data, report result in the form of formal survey maps, forms, databases, spreadsheets, emails and direct communication with programmatic personnel, safety disciplines, and management and to identify and solve moderately complex technical problems to affected program or individuals.
- Experience operating and maintaining radiological and industrial hygiene sampling and detection equipment, or other analytical equipment of similar complexity and knowledge of practical radiological and/or industrial hygiene contamination control practices.
- Effective, high-quality interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills to write clear technical documentation for the purposes of documenting surveys, maintenance, work performance, and provide comprehensive technical guidance and training.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment in a fast-paced, schedule-driven environment and able to work various shifts in support of around-the-clock operations.
- Ability to complete formal DOE Radiological Control Technician qualifications and requisite H&S Technician qualifications.
- Ability to become medically qualified to wear respiratory and protection equipment, and work with toxic and radioactive materials.
- Ability to apply torque, forceful gripping, pressing and pushing with hands and arms, climb ladders up to a height of 30 ft. and carry up to 30 lbs. Able to perform extensive bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, crawling, balancing, and climbing stairs and to work outside.
Additional qualifications at the 571.3level
- Significant related experience in Occupational Safety, Radiation Protection or related scientific area.
- Advanced technical knowledge, and the ability to acquire and analyze complex data. Advanced technical knowledge of ES&H and ability to report results and identify and solve complex technical problems. Independent analytical, decision making, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience operating, maintaining and calibrating sophisticated radiological sampling and detection equipment, or other analytical equipment of similar complexity.

Site 300
Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis ).
Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
